Join the Lewis Center’s Dr. Lovett H. Weems Jr. and Dr. Ann A. Michel for their online summer courses from Wesley Theological Seminary. Each course is 1 academic credit hour or 1.5 CEU credits.


CM-137-OL Church Finances
June 21–25, 2021

Instructor: Dr. Lovett H. Weems, Jr.

Explore the various types of budgets within a congregation, categories of income and expenses, building budgets, methods of giving, accurate tracking of giving, and proper financial administration of funds, examining all from both a theological perspective and from best practices of financial transparency and accountability. Topics include:

  • COVID-19 lessons, implications, and next steps
  • Understanding the operating, capital, and endowment funds
  • Awareness of theological and ethical issues involved in church finances
  • Practical resources to use in a congregation
  • Principles that can be applied in different church contexts
  • Expand ways to give and sources of income

The course is online with optional Zoom discussion sessions during the week.

Information for CEU students

Continuing education (CEU) students are expected to do all the reading and online assignments but not complete the final assignment. The cost for continuing education students is $150 for 1.5 CEU credits. The registration deadline for CEU for this course is June 2.

Dr. Lovett H. Weems, Jr.Lovett H. Weems Jr. is senior consultant at the Lewis Center for Church Leadership, distinguished professor of church leadership emeritus at Wesley Theological Seminary, and author of several books on leadership.

CM-142-OL Healthy Stewardship in the Local Church
June 7–11, 2021

Instructor: Dr. Ann A. Michel

Explore the biblical and theological basis for healthy congregational stewardship and survey best practices for cultivating generosity. Topics include:

  • Cultivating generosity in challenging times
  • Key doctrines related to stewardship and generosity
  • Tithing and Biblical standards of giving
  • Understanding giving patterns
  • Implementing successful stewardship campaigns
  • Developing a year-round stewardship calendar

The course is online with optional Zoom discussion sessions during the week.

Instructor

Dr. Ann A. Michel is associate director of the Lewis Center for Church Leadership of Wesley Theological Seminary and teaches in the areas of stewardship and leadership. She is also the author of Synergy: A Leadership Guide for Church Staff and Volunteers (Abingdon, 2017).
