Programs: Sustaining Pastoral Excellence

District Superintendents Cohort

Twelve United Methodist District Superintendents in the first year of their service are participating in a pilot leadership development program sponsored by the Lewis Center for Church Leadership. The District Superintendent program is part of the Sustaining Pastoral Excellence Initiative. It is one of several peer groups created for clergy at critical junctures in their ministries. This group will meet periodically over a two-year period for leadership training that includes self-assessment, theological reflection, peer interaction, and targeted skill development.

The group's work will be informed by research that the Lewis Center conducted with superintendents appointed for the first time in 2004. This research is summarized in a report entitled A District Superintendent's First Year.
