Leadership Vignette A pastor describes her first Sunday in a new congregation. I had a GREAT first Sunday today. I could not have asked for more. I was more than prepared for preaching after spending some time at the church the day before practicing my fairly brief, but not too brief, sermon. Everyone was very kind. There were even lots of people present despite it being a holiday weekend. Even with communion we ended at exactly an hour at both services! I visited each Sunday school class during that hour, and everyone seemed to really enjoy that. I made a special point during my opening remarks in worship to thank the former pastor. I also remembered the former pastor during the prayer time. Both acts seemed to be appreciated. It really helped to have had prior experiences with many of the people in the church before today. Visiting in May at the invitation of the pastor during a very public event and being seen with my predecessor during that time was key. Also, a week in the parsonage has helped too. If those things could happen for every new pastor, it would be very significant. Because of the people I had already met, I felt as though I had a "cheerleading squad" out there for me today. That was a great feeling. Having them say "well done" at the end of the service was very nice, and it seemed to be an affirmation of their work too since they have put so much into this transition and our arrival. Anyway, it is good to have the first few days behind me. |
