Workshops
Workshops are presented by knowledgeable Lewis Center staff and subject matter experts. Each participant may attend three workshops; encourage others from your church to attend other workshops and share information with each other afterward.
Tithing and Biblical Standards of Giving.
What does the Bible teach about giving? Drawing on the breadth of the Biblical witness regarding money and giving, this workshop will provide theological insights and Biblical teaching tools to help you nurture faithful and generous giving.
Preaching and Stewardship
How can you create faithful sermons that honestly address the sometimes awkward topic of money and God? This workshop will consider the theological and practical considerations that shape effective preaching for stewardship.
Planned Giving: What Every Church Can and Should Do
Churches need to help their members be good stewards of their lifetime assets. But many churches don't know how to get started with a planned giving program. This workshop will layout some simple steps that any church can take to begin to encourage legacy giving.
Key Questions in Assessing Your Church's Financial Future
How financially vulnerable is your congregation in the midst of changing economic realities? This workshop poses some key questions around debt, spending patterns, and revenue sources that your congregation can use to analyze its financial viability and steer a sound financial course.
Best Practices for Financial Integrity
Nothing is more critical to maintaining trust and encouraging giving than guarding against improprieties in the handing of church funds. This workshop will layout basic guidelines for clergy, staff, and volunteers to help assure transparency and sound handling of financial matters.
Using Endowments to Build the Future
If your church has an endowment or other permanently invested funds, are you using them to build the future or preserve the past? This workshop looks at policies for investing and spending that will help your church thrive, rather than merely survive.

While the recession has been challenging for many churches, we maintain an abundance of hope. By honestly assessing our financial situations and rethinking business as usual in the church, we can build a hopeful financial future.

To guide you along the way, the Lewis Center presents the Building a Hopeful Financial Future Conference, part of our Funding Your Congregation's Vision series, on Saturday, March 10, from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on the campus of Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. Building on our continuing work in church funding, this half-day conference for laity and clergy features insightful presentations and practical workshops to help you build a hopeful financial future for your church.
